Knee Walls in a home are often the "forgotten space", or the "didn't know we had that space". Our job as Building Science Experts is to explain the how and why to our customers; and we got to do just that at Mr. Warner's home in Valatie, NY.
So what is a knee wall?
A knee wall is the flat plane formed when a sloping surface, typically the roof plane of a building, intersects with the wall at a point that is lower than the normal ceiling height. In other words it's usually a short wall standing perpendicular to a sloped roof, and is usually added as support.
So why do they matter? And why should I insulate it?
Properly sealing and insulating attic knee walls can significantly reduce air leakage and heat loss between the conditioned space and the unfinished attic. It is important to choose an air-barrier and insulation material that will reduce the air leakage and heat loss as much as possible.
