I recently bought an older inefficient home with leaky windows, bad electric heating, what I think is an unsealed crawlspace, and old insulation. I am a new homeowner working on a modest budget to update my home, and I want to know where to focus to get the most bang for my buck improving my home's comfort and decreasing my energy costs. My electricity costs have been astronomical and I am eager to get them under control.

We purchased our home in July 2021. During summer, we managed to get through with just one window AC unit in our bedroom but it was pretty unbearable in the house. We also don't have any screens on any of the doors so we couldn't have any of those open for air flow, just the windows. My spouse works from home using herbs and powders, so the high humidity levels in the house makes that job really difficult in the summer. Over the winter we used our wood burner (spent approx $600 in wood and $7000 to get new stainless steel liners installed in our chimney) and we also used our furnace ( spent $2100 on oil). The room where the wood burner is and the rooms directly above it get very hot, but the rest of the house is freezing. Also, we will have our thermostats set to 68 but the temp never gets up to that. It doesn't seem like our home is functioning very efficiently, so it would be great to have someone come and show us how we can have a more energy efficient home so that we can save some money. We want to move away from burning fossil fuels also!

We used a lot of wood for heating last winter, yet still had high oil bills, even though we kept the thermostat at 68 during the day and let it fall to 55 at night (it never fell that low), or simply turned off the heat. This summer we hear the heat going on daily several times simply to heat the hot water tank and I just received a bill for oil (07/11/14) for $526=136.7 gallons. We moved into this house last September (2013).

The blower door test value decreased 100% after the very first day, after John's crew sealed the floors of our large attics, and sealed a small channel under the slab that allowed cold winter air to chill tile floors throughout the kitchen/DR. A very drafty house was converted to a far more comfortable house. The final number was about 30% of the initial value. A rather inefficient hybrid whole house fan/attic fan was converted to an efficient and weather-proof whole house exhaust fan for summer use. While we will not know how effective the insulation and all the other improvements will protect us from extreme heat and cold, from everything we have seen, we are (almost) looking forward to another cold winter to test the insulation.

John is the boss, not a salesperson. I had interviewed several other building scientists and insulation experts and had no trouble choosing John. He knows his business, he knows how to explain what he wants to do and why, and he worked with me, not against me, to complete the job. He made two proposals, and we ended up with a hybrid work scope.

Very professional, organized, hard-working. They checked the blower door data after every major portion of the work, and exceeded their targeted reduction in CFM 50 by approximately 2-fold. They had to adjust a few recessed lights that were a little askew after sealing and insulating a small attic, and they came in part of an extra day and fixed everything to my satisfaction.

I was looking for a local building science specialist to examine my very large, leaky and complex house, recommend and install ecologically sound insulation. John was not the cheapest, but he noticed a number of things about the house that others missed, and he was clearly very capable and very willing to explain my options in great detail. I had a lot of confidence in his company, and I am very pleased with the results.

From John's initial consultation I got the impression that not only was he knowledgeable, but he enjoyed the process of making people's home's more efficient. He was professional, personable and easy to work with.

The crew worked expediently and they seemed committed to a high level of craft. I am a carpenter myself, so I was certainly checking out the work that they had done at the close of each day and I was never disappointed. I was impressed with all aspects of each stage: cellulose blown insulation into the wall cavities, 2" foam board installation in crawlspace, vapor barrier installation under kitchen crawlspace, spray foaming around the sills, and installation of double paned windows in basement. These guys are a professional outfit with a reasonable overall price. Jill was great at helping us navigate the NYSERDA loan process and was always friendly and easy to deal with. Thanks again!!

Mr. P wanted to know how he could improve his attic space and what was the best way he should go about insulating it in certain areas. So we sent one of our highly experienced home comfort specialist to his home to provide a thorough evaluation that would provide him with the best possible solution. Our home comfort specialist found that Mr. P could insulate the ceilings of his attic space which would turn it into a conditioned attic space! Our insulation experts were quick to arrive at this home and begin the upgrade process! They first started by securing Foamax boards along all of the attic rafters as well as the gable end.
