With only 5 inches of fiber glass batt insulation, this family in Shokan, NY badly needed additional attic insulation to keep warm in the winter and reduce their heating bills. They understood immediately that an additional 12 inches of blown cellulose insulation would keep them warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer while lowering their bills. But they were reluctant to sacrifice attic storage space.
Global Dwelling was able to actually increase their storage space while almost tripling the insulation value in their attic by adding blown insulation on top of the existing insulation in the attic space around the storage area. After sealing the wall plates with spray foam insulation, they pulled up the makeshift platform used as a storage area. Next, they installed a layer of foil-faced rigid foam board insulation over the existing insulation, providing an air barrier and additional insulation above their living area. On top of the rigid foam, Global Dwelling's crew installed a plywood floor including dams to contain the blown cellulose insulation in the area surrounding the storage space. Finally they encased the duct work in spray foam insulation to keep heated air from escaping in the winter and cool air from escaping in the summer.
